I’ve attended dozens of funerals and memorial services but never has one made as lasting an impression as the service that commemorated the life of our friend Tom Paden. The chapel was filled to overflow with standing room only and some stood for the entire service in the back and in the hall. I don’t how how many attended but I would guess in the hundreds.
From his Pastor’s opening remarks, it was obvious that Tommy’s spirit was in that very room spreading infinite energy and enthusiasm and putting a smile on everyone’s face just as he did in life. His mother-in-law shared how Tom loved his God and his family and how he was always ready to pray with or for someone.
His son-in-law told how he and Tom were in the kitchen alone one day and Tom showed him his prayer list that included a prayer for a husband who loves music and would love his daughter unconditionally. Then Tom drew a line through the prayer request: Prayer answered.
As his friends took the microphone to tell stories, it became obvious that the stories about how Tom brought laughter and even disruption to marketing events, meetings and general discussions around the office could go on for ever.
Toward the end of the service, Tom’s daughter sang his favorite song and it felt as though no one breathed while through her tears she sang “Misty” with meaning, strength and love for her Dad while her husband stood by her side in support.
The sheer numbers at the service, the loving support for the family and the benefit show that followed weeks later demonstrated that sub-communities like our hospitality and entertainment community can and do bind instantly and selflessly together for the good of others.
Most importantly though, I think that most left the service with renewed motivation, with a new found belief that one person in the everyday world can make a huge difference in his or her community and touch people in surprising ways. I wonder how many new prayer lists have been started and how many people are making concious efforts to spread smiles each day. Most of us knew Tom only 5 or 6 years and he had just turned 50 when he passed but Tommy left a mark way bigger than his time on Earth.
For those of you who read this that didn’t know our friend, I hope you can sense the power of coming together, of love for one another and a love for God.
